How I Help VPs and Directors Go From Crickets to Consistent Interviews
Behind the scenes of a job search transformation
By Jen Morris
If you’re applying to jobs you’re qualified for and still not getting interviews, it’s frustrating, confusing, and honestly, a little demoralizing.
You start to wonder:
Is it my resume? My age? My background?
Or is something just… off?
That’s exactly where Allen was when we started working together.
When Allen came to me, he was doing what most seasoned professionals do after a layoff:
Applying to roles that looked interesting
Polishing up his resume the best he could
Avoiding networking because it felt awkward and unproductive
He wasn’t getting interviews at all.
“Not getting responses and want a more targeted approach.”
-Allen, before we started
He had decades of leadership experience. He was more than qualified. But nothing was sticking.
Here's what we did:
The first thing we did was look at what wasn’t working.
Allen was spending most of his time on job boards, chasing roles that weren’t aligned with his brand or story. His applications were landing in the ATS black hole, and his resume didn’t clearly connect the dots for today’s hiring teams.
So we paused the spray and pray method and got focused.
Allen suspected age bias might be part of the problem. And yes, hiring managers do sometimes make assumptions.
But when we repositioned his message, framing his decades of experience as a strategic asset rather than a liability, everything shifted.
We crafted a modern, concise narrative that highlighted:
Business transformation wins
Operational leadership at scale
Cross-functional impact that directly matched his target roles
He didn’t need to hide his experience. He needed to own it with clarity and confidence.
Next, we updated his branding to reflect the story we had developed.
His resume went from a list of responsibilities to a clear, outcomes-focused document built around the keywords and priorities of his target roles.
His LinkedIn profile was rewritten to:
Show up in recruiter searches
Make his value obvious within the first 10 seconds
Support meaningful conversations and outreach
With these pieces in place, the right people finally started paying attention.
This was the most intimidating part for Allen. Until it wasn’t.
He had been avoiding networking because it felt awkward and unclear. Together, we built a simple outreach system that:
Gave him scripts and templates he could actually use
Helped him reconnect with warm leads from his past
Made networking feel like a strategic advantage, not a painful chore
“I actually had 4 jobs I was pursuing and did get interviews at all of them. Something I’ve never done before. The networking part has become less daunting…”
—Allen, after our work together
With a stronger story, modern materials, and an active network, Allen’s search transformed fast.
We built a weekly plan that aligned with his goals and time constraints. No more endless job board scrolling. He stayed focused, intentional, and confident in his path forward.
The result?
✅ Interviews at all 4 target companies
✅ An offer for the job he wanted
✅ A higher salary than he was originally targeting
✅ And most importantly, a renewed sense that his experience is a strength, not a red flag
