“I’m Qualified. I’m Applying.

Why Am I Not Getting Interviews?”

By Jen Morris

You’re not imagining it.

You’re applying to jobs you’re qualified for, maybe even overqualified for, and still... nothing.

No callbacks. No interviews. Just silence.

It’s frustrating, especially when you know you could do the job with your eyes closed.

So what gives?

Let’s break it down—first from a recruiter’s point of view, then from a strategic fix you can actually use.

The Problem: You're Applying, But Nothing's Landing

Most of my clients show up with impressive experience.

They’ve led big teams, launched new products, improved profitability, and delivered results across industries.

They’re not struggling because they aren’t qualified.

They’re struggling because qualification alone doesn’t drive interviews anymore...especially in a competitive market.

If your job search looks like this:

  • Apply to 20+ jobs per week

  • Use one general resume with a few tweaks

  • Copy and paste from your resume into LinkedIn

  • Avoid networking because it feels vague or uncomfortable

…you’re not alone. But that’s also why you’re not getting results.

The Insider Truth: Recruiters Don't Care If You're "Qualified"

Let me say the quiet part out loud.

I used to be a recruiter. And here’s what’s really happening behind the scenes.

We’re not screening for who could do the job. We’re screening for who looks like the safest bet on paper.

That means:

  • Do you have recent experience in the same industry?

  • Have you held a similar title at a similar company size or stage?

  • Does your resume tell a story that aligns with this specific role?

  • Does your LinkedIn match your resume and show clear value at a glance?

Even if you’re technically qualified, if your materials don’t match what the market expects, or if you're targeting a pivot without the right story, you’ll keep getting overlooked.

And yes, we notice when your resume says one thing and your LinkedIn says another. We notice when you’re applying to roles far below your level. We notice when you message us without ever reading what types of roles we recruit for.

These disconnects add up fast. They create doubt.

And doubt kills interviews.

The Fix: Get Aligned, Get Specific, and Start Sounding Different

The clients I work with don’t just start getting interviews because we use better buzzwords.

They start getting interviews because we fix the alignment problem—and help them communicate like a top-tier candidate.

Here’s what we do:

1. Reposition Your Brand to Match the Roles You Want

We don’t just tweak your resume. We rebuild it with intention.

Your materials need to tell a clear, keyword-rich story that connects your background to the next role, not the last one.

Same with your LinkedIn. We make sure it reflects what you’re targeting, not just where you’ve been.

2. Target the Right Roles in the Right Places

You can’t apply to any job that “sounds interesting.”

You need to be focused on roles where your background is a strong match, and your chances of being seen are actually high.

That usually means:

  • Similar title or function

  • Related industry or product environment

  • Matching company size, scope, or complexity

This is the unsexy but critical part. Most people skip it.

We don’t.

3. Sound Better Than Everyone Else in the Inbox

Here’s your edge:

Everyone knows how to find a hiring manager. Very few know how to sound like someone worth responding to.

That’s why I give my clients custom outreach language, simple frameworks, and clear plans to stand out - without sounding desperate or robotic.

When you know what to say and how to say it, your messages get noticed.

Bottom Line: You’re Not the Problem. Your Strategy Is.

If you’re a VP or Director applying to job after job with no interviews, I want you to know this:

You're not too old.
You're not too late.
You're just out of alignment with how hiring actually works right now.

That’s what we fix inside Make Your Move, my one-month executive coaching and done-for-you writing program.
